Picked up at the comic shop yesterday:
- Criminal #7 - part two of Brubaker and Phillips' second arc in this pitch-perfect crime series. Also features an essay by Steven Grant on Robert Altman's film adaptation of Chandler's The Long Goodbye. If you haven't read the first arc, "Coward", the collection is in stores now.
- Knights of the Dinner Table #128 - stories for gamers about gamers. If you've ever played D&D, this is a must-read.
- Jack of Fables #12 - begins a new arc entitled "The Bad Prince". I sense that Pris will be at least half-naked before this one's done.
I finally got around to dropping the remaining superhero books from my Comix Experience subscription list. They've all been ridiculously stupid for the last few years, but laziness and inertia kept me ticking the boxes on the pull sheets month after month. Today I finally said what the hey and restrained myself. Here's what I'm buying in April:
- Usagi Yojimbo #102
- Conan #39
- American Virgin #14
- Fables #60
- Jack of Fables #10
- Y: The Last Man #56
- Optic Nerve #11
- Knights of the Dinner Table #126
- Ultimate Spider-Man #108 (ok fine I kept this one, it's a guilty pleasure and is still really fun)
- Astonishing X-Men #22 (I think it's only fair to spot Whedon his last three issues)
Just received in email:
Comic Relief: The Comic Bookstore and Hijinx Comics are excited to invite you to contribute to what we hope will be the next great comic book community and resource on the internet: http://www.comicbookshelf.com.
Featuring listings for thousands of contemporary titles, ComicBookShelf is a new way to not only find other opinions on the graphic novels you're interested in, but also to contribute reviews to help others make informed decisions about what to read next. ComicBookShelf allows you to rate, review, and tag graphic novels and to share reviews with friends and organize your own bookshelf. The system will also learn your taste based on your reviews, and can recommend new titles to you based on reviews from other members.
A joint venture of California comic retailers Comic Relief and Hijinx Comics, ComicBookShelf is currently inviting users for the first phase of its operations, in order to build a wide range of reviews across the spectrum of titles it has to offer, based upon the opinion of graphic novel readers from around the country and around the world.
An unique attempt to centralize opinions on graphic novels and visual books in all forms—including manga, comic strips, non-fiction, art books and more —ComicBookShelf will continue to add features in the coming months, including shopping functions that will reward those reviewers who persuade others to try their own favorite graphic novels.
ComicBookShelf is a free community, and asks all interested parties to sign up and start rating, reviewing, and tagging your favorite graphic novels. We are also actively soliciting the opinion of all users in order to develop new features and make sure the site offers all the information you need. Just go to www.comicbookshelf.com to sign up for your free account and start building a new kind of comics community.
Thanks,

Andi Watson, one of my favorite cartoonists, flickr'd some work he's doing for an upcoming strip. check out the pencils and then the inks for the same page. this is the first time i've ever observed stages of the process, and it's right cool that he shared them with us. and the page looks great. the empty word ballons are freaking me out.
Alan Moore is really working hard to make the entire world hate him:
