my goals for the weekend were to eat and drink and smoke and walk around. needless to say, they were admirably achieved.
my parents got into genealogy in the 90s. i believe they tracked down the first known Moseley in the colonies, and i want to say he came to Virginia in the 1700s, but i can't really remember. maybe if my mom reads my blog she can correct me. my friend Derek found a road sign in England that pointed the way to Moseley, which i also want to say is where the name originally comes from. but really i'm just talking out of my ass here.
For my very first vox post, i will respond to Sneuf , who asks what songs makes us happy.
This weekend i had my first real music shopping trip in months - I took a friend visiting from Korea to Amoeba Records on Haight St. Luckily I wound up making it out of there with only two handfuls of CDs and DVDs.
My favorite purchase so far has been this Elvis Costello DVD, a show with his band the Imposters in Memphis in 2004. The set mixes some of the popular tunes (Radio Radio , Alison , Pump It Up ), some of my old favorites (Waiting for the End of the World , Mystery Dance , Blame It on Cain ), and a few of the best tracks from The Delivery Man (especially Either Side of the Same Town ). There are three duets with Emmylou Harris and a couple covers too.
I've seen Elvis a few times, always in large venues like theaters and symphony halls, and it's great to see him and the band for once in an intimate club setting. There's energy and heart and they all look like they're having the best time in the world. I have always wondered how musicians get all dressed up in fancy duds and manage to look unaffected by the heat of the spotlight. Well, in this show, Elvis sweats like two rats humping in a wool sock. For some reason this makes me even more fond of him.
